14-Year-Old Girl Survives Without Heart for 118 Days at Holtz
Children's Hospital
D'Zhana Simmons Believed to be First Pediatric Patient to Survive with
Custom-Made Total Artificial Heart for this Length of Time
Fourteen-year-old D’Zhana Simmons was kept alive for 118 days with a
custom-made total artificial heart while awaiting a second transplant at Holtz
Children’s Hospital at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center.
She is believed to be the first pediatric patient to survive without a heart

The 2008
"Best Hospitals" rankings from U.S.News & World Report
have been released and once again,
the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center has more specialties ranked among the best
in America than any other hospital in South Florida. Three
specialties, ear, nose and throat, neurology and neurosurgery, and geriatrics were ranked, and
for the fifth year in a row, UM's Bascom Palmer Eye Institute earned top honors
